
2008 Project List
All project requests are reviewed in fall by a committee comprised of Master Gardener volunteers and UW-Extension staff. Because there are more requests than volunteers, guidelines have been adopted to help approve the projects. These criteria are:
- Visibility – promotes (or gives credit to) Master Gardener program and UW-Extension
- Educational for the public
- Benefits the general public (non-profit)
- Must have Master Gardener coordinator and/or interest by Master Gardeners
- Annual project report must be submitted by October 1st

Some projects are specific to Kenosha or Racine County and some are done in both counties.

UW-Extension horticulture - this volunteer work is always considered "core" for Master Gardener volunteer hours.
Kenosha and Racine Projects
- RKMGA Communications
This committee creates the newsletter and other works for the members benefit. Contact: Meryl Strichartz
- Plant Health Advisors – Racine and Kenosha Office telephone helpline, outreach sites in both counties. This group of volunteers helps area homeowners by answering their plant, garden and pest questions backed by UW research based information. Contact: Barb Larson, Kenosha, Patti Nagai, Racine
- Junior Master Gardener – working with grade school age youth using the Junior Master Gardener curriculum. In summer will help a summer staff person at sites in the cities of Kenosha and Racine. Contact: Barb Larson
- Racine/Kenosha MG Purple Loosestrife Eradication Project informs, educates and works toward the control of Purple Loosestrife through manual and biological means. Contact: Sue Pettit

Kenosha County Projects
Brookside Care Center Beautification – design, plant and maintain gardens at county nursing home. Contact: Wayne Thomas
Chiwaukee Prairie – help maintain prairie by working on and teaching control of invasive plants. Contact: Lennie Weiss
Farm in the City– Work with Spanish speaking women farming and selling their products at the Kenosha Harbor Market. Contact: Rocio Bailey
Hospice Meditation Garden, Pleasant Prairie –Plant and maintain therapeutic gardens including palnt labeling and creating a garden maintenance plan. Contact: Alice Linders-Olson or Carol Bastian
Kemper Center – maintain gardens and landscape at public facility. Meets every Tuesday afternoon. Contact: Diane Holzschuh
Kenosha County Center Demo and Trial Gardens –New for 2008. Plant and maintain trial gardens at the county office building. Contact: Barb Larson
Kenosha County Courthouse – plant and maintain landscape around Courthouse. Contact: Kim Manna
Kenosha County Fair – has a demonstration garden for annuals and vegetables. Contact: Jill Anderson
Orchard at Kenosha County Center – maintain and harvest fruit in orchard used for teaching and production. Contact: Barb Larson
Spring Garden Seminar - plan, organize and facilitate a day long multi-session seminar for gardeners. Contact: Barb Larson

Racine County Projects
Botany in the Classroom – provides an educational hands on program to 3rd to 5th graders Contact: Burt Blomgren
Garden of Eatin’-A Vegetation Celebration - a community garden at a new location demonstrating organic vegetable production. All food raised is donated to the Racine County Food Bank. Contact: Jim Kairis or Nancy Harland
Gardens of DeKoven – maintain and design herb, perennial and container gardens in a historic setting. Contact: Patti Jones or Marianne Maleske
Graham Public Library Union Grove – plant and maintain demonstration garden and landscape Contact: Sharon Shouldice
Harvest of Hope, Burlington, shows raised bed vegetable gardening with produce donated to Love, Inc. Contact: Mary & Ed Krumrey
Therapeutic Horticulture "Green Works" – work with adults with developmental disabilities to teach greenhouse job skills. Contact: Patti Nagai
Lakeside Curative Therapeutic Horticulture - new program for 2008. Contact: Jim Chaussee
Mt. Carmel Nursing Home, Burlington – plant and maintain gardens while educating staff and public. Contact: Judy Stone
Pioneer Cabin Vintage Garden, Burlington plan, plant and maintain historic gardens Contact: Judith Stone
Prairie School Plot and Giving Garden – plant and maintain a youth education garden that gives harvested produce to local food banks. Contact: Ellen Albrecht
Racine County Visitors and Convention Bureau – plan, plant and maintain demonstration garden at Visitor’s Center. Contact: Debra Cote
Racine Public Library – maintain plants in downtown library. Contact: Jim and Sally Tompsett
Racine Zoo Gardens – design, plant and maintain new and existing gardens. Contact: Davis Driver or Corrinne Merry
Ridgewood Care Facility – plant and maintain gardens . Contact: Jerry Steimle
Shoop Park Gardens, Racine – include terrace, perennial and annual gardens at a public golf course owned by the City of Racine. Contact: Donna Powers
Southern Oaks School for Girls, Union Grove – is the site of a garden project aimed at teaching troubled young women about gardening. Contact: Sharon Shouldice
Sturtevant Beautification – plant and maintain gardens at several locations in Sturtevant. Contact: Rose Woodruff
Town of Norway Town Hal "No Mow Areas" – plant and maintain new natural plantings at the Town Hall. Contact: Judy & Dick Ohl
Youthful Friends – work with incarcerated youth on four beautiful vegetable gardens at the Racine Youthful Offenders Facility. Contact: Walter Fleuchaus
Master Gardener Horticulture Helpline : 262-857-1942. The fall and winter seasons are upon us. During that time, calls are answered on Wednesday from 9 am to noon. You may leave a message and we will return your call Monday thru Friday during normal business hours..
